The sardine is hooked through the lips on the top hook, and this hook bears the full weight for casting. The metal weight allows the bait to be trolled in a very natural manner, without spinning. There is no need to use bait cotton to secure the bait, and the hook is placed exactly where the shad hits the prey-in the tail area.
